How to choose a car dealer

Buying a vehicle is one of the biggest purchases most families make. The dealer you pick matters as much as the car: it decides the final price, the financing terms and how you’re treated when something goes wrong.

01

Compare the out-the-door price

Ask every dealer for a written out-the-door quote that includes taxes, title, registration and all dealer fees. That’s the only number worth comparing.

02

Get pre-approved first

A loan pre-approval from your bank or credit union gives you a rate to beat and keeps the finance office honest.

03

Read the 1–3 star reviews

Look for patterns: surprise add-ons, slow title transfers or service problems after the sale.

04

Inspect used vehicles independently

For any used car, pay a trusted mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection and pull a vehicle history report.

Common questions about car dealers

Are dealer fees negotiable?

Government fees (tax, title, registration) are not. Dealer-added items like “prep”, “etching” or “protection packages” often are. Some states cap documentation fees.

Is there a cooling-off period for car purchases?

In most states, no. Once you sign, the deal is usually final, so read every page before you sign.

Should I buy the extended warranty?

It’s optional and its price is negotiable. You can also buy one later or from a third party.
