Picking a trucking or moving company

Whether you’re shipping freight or moving a household, check credentials first. Brokers and carriers are not the same thing.

01

Check the USDOT / MC number

Look up interstate carriers in the FMCSA database (SAFER) for authority, insurance and safety record.

02

Binding vs. non-binding estimates

For moves, a binding estimate locks the price. Non-binding ones can go up on delivery day.

03

Understand liability coverage

Basic carrier liability is often very limited. Ask about full-value protection or cargo insurance.

04

Watch for low-ball quotes

A quote far below the others is a common sign of hostage-load or bait-and-switch scams.

Common questions about trucking & logistics

What is the difference between a broker and a carrier?

A carrier owns the trucks and moves your goods. A broker arranges the shipment with a carrier. Both should be registered with FMCSA.
